Lunch & Learn: Mass Timber Design and Construction 101 presented by O'Donnell & Naccarato Structural Engineers

Description: Mass Timber Design and Construction 101 is an introductory course geared toward architects, engineers, construction professionals, and designers. Mass Timber is an umbrella term that encompasses various natural and engineered wood products used as structural and architectural elements in building construction. When designing a Mass Timber structural system of any height, special consideration must be given to fire safety, current code regulations, layout, connections, bay spacing, lateral design, and aesthetics. Because of wood’s natural attributes, Mass Timber allows for architectural elements with striking finishes and sculptural characteristics. Regional sourcing and individualized manufacturing practices impact the quality, availability, and cost of both natural and engineered mass timber products. Including:

Types of mass timber include traditional heavy timber, cross laminated timber (CLT), nail laminated timber (NLT), glue laminated timber (glulam), parallel strand lumber (PSL), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), laminated strand lumber (LSL), oriented strand lumber (OSL), nail laminated timber (NLT), and dowel laminated timber (DLT), etc.

Prerequisite Knowledge:

A basic understanding of common architectural/engineering/construction methods and terminology is recommended.

Learning Objectives:

1. Course attendees will gain an understanding of various natural and engineered wood products including: heavy timber, CLT, NLT, DLT, PSL, LVL, and glulam, etc.

2. Course attendees will gain an understanding of the evolution of building code governing mass timber construction.

3. Course attendees will gain an understanding of material sourcing, quality variances, scheduling, and cost.

4. Course attendees will gain an understanding of special considerations including lateral design, layout, bay spacing, connections, and aesthetics.

Meet Our Speaker:

Dennis Mordan, PE, SE, President of O’Donnell & Naccarato, is a nationally recognized thought leader dedicated to promoting the significant sustainability and cost-efficiency benefits of mass timber. O&N’s AIA-accredited “Mass Timber 101” program, in collaboration with groups like the Wood Council, aims to enhance education and enthusiasm about the use of mass timber in construction.
